the parade
On a beautiful summer day in 2026, Bart Drost is at the Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht, looking for a painting that 'speaks to him'?something he can work with?
when he comes across *The Carrying of the Cross*, created around 1605 in the workshop of Jan Brueghel the Younger.
Using his phone as a camera, he scans the canvas, taking over 60 photographs.
He had these photos printed and began recreating them in pencil? on a small scale, one (sometimes two) each day. He rarely drew the entire composition; most often, he focused on a single detail.
A wondrous world unfolds on the paper. At times, a fairly realistic depiction emerges, while at other times, his imagination runs wild. The result is the collection of 50 black-and-white drawings in this booklet, presented alongside the original color photographs.
