a hodgepodge

On a beautiful summer day in 2026, Bart Drost visits the Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch. There, in a magnificent hall, hangs the painting 'Allegory of Earth and Summer' by Jan Brueghel the Elder?a work dating from around 1600. He finds himself deeply moved by it, though he cannot say why. Using his phone as a camera, he scans the canvas in every direction, snapping photos feverishly? more than 60 of them, all in a square format. Back home, he had the photos printed and began recreating them in pencil. One each day?sometimes two. He rarely drew the entire image; usually, he focused on a single detail. A wondrous world unfolded on the paper: at times, a fairly realistic depiction emerged, while at other times, his imagination ran wild.
